Rovereto: From Industrial City to Cultural, University, and Technological Hub

Rovereto is a city with a long history of industry and craftsmanship, rooted since the 15th century when the introduction of silkworm breeding and mulberry cultivation by the Republic of Venice made it an important silk center. Silk mills, powered by the waters of local streams, became real production hubs that shaped the economy and social life of the city for many centuries.

During the 20th century, after the decline of silk, Rovereto experienced a new industrial flourishing, especially thanks to the Manifattura Tabacchi di Borgo Sacco, inaugurated in the mid-19th century. For many decades, it was the main engine of the local economy, providing jobs for thousands of workers and serving as an innovative center for production techniques. This industrial development consolidated Rovereto’s role as a key industrial hub for Trentino, which continues and evolves today with a strong technological and productive vocation.

Manifattura Project: Innovation and Green Economy

The Manifattura Project is the technological park of Trentino Sviluppo dedicated to sustainable innovation. Born from the redevelopment of the former tobacco factory in Rovereto, it now hosts companies, startups, and research centers active in the fields of green economy, renewable energy, sustainable mobility, and biotechnology. Within Manifattura, efforts are made to foster the birth and growth of environmentally sustainable ideas and businesses in modern, low-impact production spaces.

Mechatronics Hub: Technological Excellence

Alongside Manifattura, the Mechatronics Hub of Rovereto is a true center for intelligent industry. On a surface area of over 14 hectares, it hosts companies, laboratories, and advanced training services, promoting collaboration between businesses and research. The Hub offers high-profile technological infrastructure for mechatronics and sustainability, contributing to the industrial competitiveness of the city and the entire Trentino region.

University and Research Centers: CIMeC and CERISM

Rovereto hosts important branches of the University of Trento, including CIMeC (Center for Mind/Brain Sciences) and CERISM. CIMeC is internationally recognized for excellence in neuroscience and cognitive sciences research, hosting degree courses, interdisciplinary research activities, and innovative projects with direct impact on the local territory. CERISM, on the other hand, focuses on applied research in sports and physical activities, testing technologies and models also useful for the local industry.

Industrial Area and Shopping Centers

Rovereto’s industrial area remains a fundamental economic engine, with numerous companies active, especially in the mechatronics sector. Alongside the productive fabric, a modern and varied commercial offer has developed. The Millennium Center is the largest shopping center in Trentino-Alto Adige and, together with Leno Center and Rovercenter, offers services, shops, and restaurants, becoming a reference point for both residents and visitors.

This story highlights how Rovereto has managed to leverage its silk and industrial past to transform into a vibrant center of innovation, culture, and sustainable development, maintaining a strong local identity.
